Crop PDF

Trim margins and crop pages in your PDF to the desired dimensions.

Crop PDF trims the margins or specific page areas of a PDF. Useful for removing scanner borders, cleaning up scanned book pages, or reformatting documents for a smaller paper size. Original content is preserved — only the visible page area changes.

How Crop PDF works

Cropping a PDF is fundamentally different from editing the page content. PDFs have a "MediaBox" that defines the full physical page size and a "CropBox" that defines what viewers actually display. Changing the CropBox crops the visible area without touching the underlying content — so a cropped PDF is reversible: open it in a tool that ignores the CropBox and the trimmed margins come back.

SwitchPDF updates the CropBox on every page (or just the pages you specify) using your margin values. The content beyond the new boundary is still inside the file, just hidden from view. This is the same approach Adobe Acrobat uses for its "Crop Pages" feature and is universally compatible with PDF readers.

Common use cases: removing the white scanner border that shows up on every page of a poorly aligned scan; trimming a 2-up book scan into individual single pages; reformatting an A3 document to A4 by cropping; cleaning up edges before printing on a smaller paper size. For destructive cropping (actually removing the off-page content) you would need to re-render each page — we don't do that because it costs quality and few users actually want it.

The tool accepts margins in points (the PDF native unit — 1 point = 1/72 inch) or millimeters. The preview shows the final page size so you can verify before downloading. You can crop all pages uniformly or apply different crops to different page ranges by running the tool twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What unit are the margins in?
+
Points (1/72 inch, the PDF native unit) or millimeters — switch between them with the unit toggle.
Is cropping reversible?
+
Partially. We update the CropBox but leave the original content in the file. Specialty PDF tools can restore the original MediaBox. Standard viewers respect the crop.
Can I crop just one page?
+
Yes. Specify a page range to crop only the listed pages, leaving the rest at the original size.
Will the file get smaller after cropping?
+
Slightly — the page boxes update — but the underlying content is unchanged so the size reduction is small. To actually shrink the file, compress it after cropping.
Will the cropped PDF print correctly?
+
Yes. Printers respect the CropBox, so the printed output will be the cropped size.
Can I crop a password-protected PDF?
+
Unlock it first using our Unlock PDF tool, then crop.
How is this different from cropping in Preview?
+
Preview's crop is permanent (re-renders the page). Ours is non-destructive (just updates the CropBox). Both result in a smaller visible page; ours preserves the option to restore later.
Is Crop PDF free?
+
Yes. Completely free, no signup, no watermark.
