How Edit PDF works
Editing an existing PDF is harder than editing a Word document. PDFs were designed to look identical everywhere — they freeze fonts, layout, and positioning. To change text in a PDF you need the exact same font that was used originally, or the replacement will look wrong (different width, spacing, weight). Most editors solve this by re-rendering the page, which destroys image quality.
SwitchPDF takes a different approach. We render each page at high DPI as the canvas background, then place your edits as an overlay on top. When you double-click existing text, we read the font's PostScript name from the PDF's font table and use the same family in the editable replacement. This preserves the visual character so your edit blends in with the original.
For the export step, we apply the overlay back into the PDF as native PDF objects where possible (new text becomes selectable text, not an image) and rasterize anything that can't be cleanly emitted (in-place text replacements that don't perfectly match the original font are rasterized to keep them looking right). The result is a single PDF that anyone can open without special software.
What this tool is good at: adding signatures, redacting/whiting-out information, dropping in shapes or arrows to annotate, replacing a date or amount on an invoice, adding a logo. What it is NOT good at: bulk text editing of an existing paragraph, changing the layout of a document, or replacing embedded fonts perfectly. For document-style editing of native text content, convert to Word first using our PDF to Word tool.
