Watermark PDF

Add a text or image watermark to your PDF pages.

Add a text or image watermark to every page of a PDF — useful for branding, marking documents as drafts, indicating confidentiality, or stamping copyright notices. Configurable opacity, rotation, and position.

How Watermark PDF works

A watermark is a semi-transparent overlay applied to every page of a document. SwitchPDF supports two kinds: text watermarks (a string of letters drawn at a configurable rotation and opacity) and image watermarks (a PNG or JPG, typically a logo). Both are added as native PDF objects so they remain crisp at every zoom level and travel with the document everywhere it goes.

For text watermarks we embed the font into the PDF (Helvetica by default) and draw the text using a transparency operator that makes it semi-see-through. The classic "DRAFT" diagonal watermark is a 45° rotation at 30% opacity — but you can configure any angle and opacity from 10% to 100%. For image watermarks we embed the image as a Form XObject and place it at your chosen position on every page.

Common use cases: branding deliverables with a company logo before sending to a client; marking pre-publication documents as "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT"; stamping copyright notices on creative work; flagging internal-only versions of contracts. The watermark survives copy-paste and is part of the document's content stream — anyone who tries to remove it has to physically delete each watermark object, which is not trivial without specialized tools.

If you need the watermark to be a header or footer (different on different pages, with dynamic content like page numbers), use our Page Numbers tool or run Watermark PDF in batches with different page ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an image as a watermark?
+
Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG, or transparent PNG and we place it on every page at your chosen position and opacity.
Can the watermark be rotated?
+
Yes — any angle from 0° to 360°. The classic diagonal "DRAFT" watermark is 45° at 30% opacity.
How transparent can the watermark be?
+
Opacity is configurable from 10% (very faint) to 100% (solid). 25–40% is typical for unobtrusive branding.
Will the watermark appear on every page?
+
Yes. By default the watermark is applied to all pages. If you need different watermarks on different pages, run the tool in multiple passes with page ranges.
Can someone remove my watermark?
+
Not easily. The watermark is part of each page's content stream and can't be deleted without an advanced PDF editor and per-page manual work.
Does the watermark survive printing?
+
Yes. The watermark is part of the rendered page, so it appears in print, in screenshots, and in any downstream PDF transformation.
Will my text be searchable through the watermark?
+
Yes. The watermark is drawn over the existing content, but the original text remains untouched and searchable.
Is Watermark PDF free?
+
Yes. Completely free, no signup, no watermark beyond the one you add yourself.
