Merge PDF

Combine multiple PDF files into a single document. Drag to reorder before merging.

Merge PDF combines two or more PDF files into a single document while keeping the original text, images, fonts, and bookmarks intact. It runs entirely on our server, finishes in seconds, requires no account, and works on any device with a browser — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS.

How Merge PDF works

When you merge PDFs in SwitchPDF, each file is parsed page by page using the open-source pdf-lib library. We extract every page object — including its text streams, font references, embedded images, and form fields — and append them to a new output document in the order you specified. Bookmarks and metadata from the first file are preserved as the merged document's outline.

Because we operate on the underlying PDF objects directly (not by re-rendering the page as an image), the merge is lossless. A 300-DPI scan stays at 300 DPI. A document with selectable, searchable text stays selectable and searchable. Fonts that are embedded in the source PDFs remain embedded, so the merged file renders identically on every device.

Most online merger tools strip annotations, flatten form fields, or recompress images "to save space." SwitchPDF deliberately does not — the output is byte-for-byte the same quality as your inputs, just stitched together. The trade-off is a slightly larger file, which you can shrink afterwards using our Compress PDF tool if needed.

The merge happens in your browser session via a single HTTPS request. We do not store, index, or share your files. After 15 minutes the upload and the merged output are both permanently removed from disk by an automatic cleanup job.

How to use Merge PDF

1

Upload your PDF files

Click "Choose files" or drag and drop up to 20 PDF files into the upload area. The order you add them in becomes the initial order.

2

Arrange the order

Use the up/down buttons next to each file to reorder the documents exactly how you want them in the final merged PDF.

3

Merge and download

Click "Merge PDF" and your combined PDF will be ready to download in seconds. The file is auto-deleted from our server after 15 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is merging PDF files free?
+
Yes. SwitchPDF is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark, no email required, and no file count limits beyond a sensible cap of 20 files per merge.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
+
Up to 20 PDF files per merge operation. If you have more, just run the tool twice on smaller batches and merge the two results.
Will the quality of my PDF be affected?
+
No. We use lossless merging via pdf-lib — your original formatting, images, fonts, and resolution are fully preserved. The merged PDF is the same quality as the originals.
Are my files safe?
+
Yes. Files are transferred over HTTPS, processed on a private server, and permanently deleted within 15 minutes. We do not log file contents, share them with third parties, or use them for training.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
+
Not directly — you need to unlock them first using our Unlock PDF tool (which requires the password), then merge the unlocked copies.
Do bookmarks and table of contents survive the merge?
+
Bookmarks from the first PDF are kept as the outline of the merged document. Bookmarks in subsequent files are not appended, since combining outlines is rarely what users actually want.
What is the maximum file size I can upload?
+
Each PDF can be up to 100 MB. If your file is larger, compress it first with our Compress PDF tool before merging.
Does SwitchPDF work on mobile?
+
Yes. The interface is fully responsive — you can merge PDFs from an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or any browser. The processing runs on our server, so your device does not need any extra power.
