How Excel to PDF works
Excel-to-PDF conversion is essentially "print to PDF" — taking the spreadsheet's print preview and writing it as a PDF document. SwitchPDF uses LibreOffice Calc's headless export, which renders the spreadsheet using the same engine that Calc uses for its native print preview. The result matches what you would get if you opened the file in Excel and used "Save as PDF."
For multi-sheet workbooks, each sheet becomes its own section in the PDF. If a sheet is wider than a printable page, LibreOffice handles the pagination automatically — splitting columns across pages or scaling to fit, depending on the sheet's print settings. Cell formatting (colors, fonts, borders, conditional formatting) is preserved. Charts and embedded images are rendered as part of the page. Formulas are converted to their calculated values — the PDF shows numbers, not the underlying formula expressions.
Print areas defined in the source file are respected: if a sheet has a defined print area, only that range is exported. Otherwise, the entire used range of the sheet is exported. Page breaks are honored. Headers and footers (Excel's built-in header/footer feature) are included.
Common use cases: producing client-facing reports from analytical spreadsheets; archiving spreadsheets in a format that cannot be accidentally edited; preparing print-ready financial documents; sharing data with people who do not have Excel installed.
