Unlock PDF

Remove password protection from your PDF file.

Unlock PDF removes the password protection from a PDF — provided you know the current password. The result is a clean, unencrypted PDF that opens directly in any viewer. We do not bypass encryption; you must supply the password.

Only unlock PDFs you own or have explicit permission to modify. Removing password protection from files you do not own may violate copyright law.

How Unlock PDF works

Unlocking a PDF is the reverse of protecting it. SwitchPDF uses pdf-lib to decrypt the file using your password, derive the decryption key, decrypt every content stream, and write a new PDF without any encryption layer. The output is a normal, unencrypted PDF — same content, same fidelity, no password prompt when opened.

We are explicit about one thing: this tool does NOT crack passwords. AES-256 encryption is mathematically infeasible to brute-force without the original password. If you have forgotten the password, no online tool can recover it — not us, not Adobe, not "free password recovery services" (most of which are scams). The only legitimate way to unlock a PDF you have lost the password to is to get a fresh copy from the original sender.

Legitimate use cases: removing protection from your own documents that you no longer need encrypted; preparing a PDF for further editing in another tool that does not handle encryption gracefully; archiving in an environment where you control access through other means and the file-level password is redundant; bulk processing of documents you have legitimate access to.

The password you enter is used in-memory to perform the decryption and is then immediately discarded. We do not log it, save it, or transmit it anywhere besides our processing server. The unlocked PDF and the original upload are both deleted from disk after 15 minutes.

How to use Unlock PDF

1

Upload your protected PDF

Drag and drop the password-protected PDF you want to unlock.

2

Enter the password

Type the current PDF password. We need this to decrypt the file — there is no way around it.

3

Download the unlocked PDF

Click "Unlock PDF" and download the unencrypted version. It will open without prompting for a password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you unlock a PDF without the password?
+
No. We need the current password to decrypt the file. There is no legitimate way around AES-256 encryption — anyone claiming otherwise is either using a weak older standard or is scamming you.
What if I forgot the password?
+
Get a fresh copy from the original sender. No tool can recover a forgotten AES-256 password by brute force in a reasonable amount of time.
Is the unlocked PDF the same quality?
+
Yes. We only remove the encryption layer — the content (text, images, fonts) is byte-for-byte identical to the original.
Will the unlocked PDF still have restrictions?
+
No. Both the password and any restriction flags (no-print, no-copy) are removed. The output is a fully editable, copy-able, printable PDF.
Do you store the password?
+
No. The password is held in memory only during decryption and immediately discarded. We never log, save, or transmit it.
Is this legal?
+
Yes, when unlocking your own documents or documents you have explicit permission to unlock. Distributing or unlocking documents you do not have rights to access may violate copyright or computer access laws in your jurisdiction.
Can I unlock multiple PDFs at once?
+
Currently one at a time. For batch unlocking, run the tool in quick succession — each takes a few seconds.
Is Unlock PDF free?
+
Yes. Completely free, no signup.
